East St. Louis — A federal jury in East St. Louis ordered three Sauget police officers Monday to pay $107,000 to two men from Michigan who claimed they were beaten and shocked with stun guns during an arrest three years ago.

Adam Martin and Kenneth Pickard sued the village of Sauget and Officers Brian Phillips, Jeff Donahey, Scott Hedgpeth and J.R. Kinnard, alleging that the police used excessive force, among other things, while arresting them outside the Diamond Cabaret nightclub.

The officers used a Taser on the men outside the club and at the police station booking area. Video cameras were installed in the booking area months later.

The judgment was against Phillips and Hedgpeth, who continue to work for the department, and Donahey, now an officer with Granite City police. The judge dismissed the case against Kinnard and the jury did not find the village of Sauget liable for damages.

The plaintiffs' attorney, Al Johnson, said he was pleased with the verdict and said the officers should be charged with crimes.

Sauget police Chief Patrick Delaney said he respected the jurors' decision and was pleased they did not believe there was a pattern of abuse, but that he felt the awards were excessive. He maintained that his officers acted appropriately in arresting the men and said they would face no discipline.
