NORMANDY - A nearly five-year veteran of the police department has been charged with a felony after police say he used his police fuel credit card to buy $600 in gas for his family's personal vehicles.

Members of his own police department obtained video surveillance showing Deandre Montgomery, 41, of the 6700 block of Robert Avenue in Pagedale using his department fuel card to gas up the vehicles at the Quik Trip in the 9000 block of Natural Bridge between January and October, said Chief Frank Mininni.

"When we got the tip, I was shocked," Mininni said. "But then we put surveillance on him and it was pretty easy after that. It made me sick when I saw him actually doing it. He doesn't deserve to wear a badge."

Mininni said his department is alerting state officials about Montgomery's conduct in an effort to have his police certification revoked so he cannot work as an officer elsewhere.

"He said, 'Times are hard,' but times are hard for everyone," Mininni said. "We arrest people every day for stealing, and he just stooped to that level. We as police officers take an oath and we've got to be above it."

Montgomery resigned immediately when confronted with the evidence. He was arrested and released.
