Officer who detained ABC-7 crew demoted
May 6, 2009

EL PASO, Texas -- A police sergeant who was involved in a confrontation with an ABC-7 news crew has been demoted. The demotion of Raul Ramirez is for use of force in a matter that has nothing to do with the incident on I-10 two weeks ago in which reporter Darren Hunt and photographer Ric Dupont were arrested.

Ramirez is now a patrol officer, according to Javier Sambrano, a spokesman with the El Paso Police Department.

Sambrano said the demotion stems from an incident in November. The police department's Internal Affairs department received complaints against another officer, and in the course of that investigation, they found Ramirez had displayed what police call an "improper tactic."

Sambrano did not elaborate any further on the November incident. The investigation into that incident ended about a week ago, and an assistant chief recommended Ramirez's demotion at the end of last week.

Ramirez is now at police headquarters, reviewing reports for the organization that certifies peace officers.

Our partners at Newspaper Tree also report that Ramirez received a seven-day suspension.

The incident caught on tape involving the ABC-7 news crew remains under investigation.
