An off-duty St. Louis police detective was drunk when he drove the wrong way on Interstate 270 near Troy, Ill., crashing head-on into a pickup truck and killing him, according to testimony today at the Madison County coroner's inquest.

Toxicology tests showed that Andre Jones, 51, had a blood-alcohol level of 0.14. Testing of his eye fluid, which is more accurate than blood tests, revealed an alcohol level of 0.2, according to testimony.

The legal limit to drive in Illinois is 0.08.

Jones was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes on Oct. 18 when he crashed at 11:30 p.m. roughly a quarter-mile west of Interstate 55. The driver of the pickup, James W. Klein II of Highland, suffered minor injuries.

Illinois State Police Trooper Alicia Melton said that authorities had not been able to determine how far Jones drove in the wrong direction, or why he was in the area. Jones lived in St. Louis and had been a St. Louis police officer for 28 years.
